An End of Year Round-Up from The Board of Directors at Greendale Construction

The Board of Directors are pleased to report that in its 25th financial year Greendale Construction Limited has achieved a great set of results which have fully met our business growth plans. On all measurable financial markers we have improved. Operating profits are up, turnover has increased by 33.1% and this represents our highest volume of work ever undertaken in one financial year.  Although the market is still tough we have seen more confidence and opportunities across all work sectors.

In-line with planned company growth,  staff appointments have increased – in particular, strengthening our small works division and contract / QS / estimating management resource. We currently have two graduates and three carpentry apprentices training with us.  We plan to take on more trainees and apprentices next year.

Investment in training is at an all-time high and we really see the benefits of this by having a well-trained and committed workforce.

 

We have had many highlights on the project front and have completed a diverse range of jobs across our sectors.

Commercial

Poole Methodist Church, completion of phases 1 and 2 – new build community rooms extension to rear of church and the continuation of the internal refurb and alterations to this landmark late Victorian edifice in the heart of Poole High Street.

Blandford Brewery Extension for Hall and Woodhouse – a hugely important “anchor” project for us this financial year and one which went very despite all the technically and logistical challenges.

Littledown Centre Gym – We undertook a large extension and internal alterations and improvements over 7 phases keeping the existing busy centre open through -out the build programme.

Conversion of the Old Wareham magistrates court buildings into new offices and manufacturing base for Biotrack Limited.

Units 2 & 3 Tower Park Poole – external and internal maintenance and improvements to enable new lease.

West Point Westbourne – major repairs to apartment block

We are very pleased to have commenced two new industrial units:

Ballie Gate, Sturminster Marshall, comprising new 10600ft2 warehousing split into 5 units for Birchmere Group.

Warehouses and Offices at Christchurch:  12900ft2 for Stewart Garden Centres split in to 2 no large units with offices.

Education

We undertook two projects in the year for Bournemouth University external repairs to the Old Fire station and M&E improvements at Studland House.

 

Our links with Hampshire County Council continued apace where we completed SCOLA Re – clad and roofing projects at Aldworth College Basingstoke and Priestlands School Lymington.

Health

A busy year undertaking various health sector projects. We completed 3 refurbishment and enabling projects at St Anns’s Hospital, Poole for local NHS Trust. We have successfully carried out office co – location projects at Blandford Community Hospital and Westminster Hospital, Shaftsbury. We constructed a new ophthalmology centre at Yeatman Hospital, Sherborne  and have just embarked on a cluster of maintenance projects at various locations throughout Dorset.  We have also recently commenced the extension and refurbishment of Sway Surgery for the New Forest Central Medical Group.

Private

We are very proud of the stunning new build house, ’Woodlands,’ constructed near Devizes and designed by renowned Architect Peter Thomas de Cruz.  Greendale also undertook a complete refresh, remodel and renovation of a large apartment at Little Fosters in Poole.

Small works

Another successful year of growth for this division which is going from strength to strength. Numerous refurbishment, maintenance and new build project sub 250k across the region undertaken by dedicated small work teams.

Electrical

Our electrical division has had a steady and successful year.  They undertake all our in house PAT testing and contracts offering a full NICEIC electrical installation service for external clients, and where applicable,  our in-house projects.

Very proud of what we have achieved at The Kitchen, Poole Park:  A fast track remodelling of an existing restaurant building on the shore of Poole Park,  including the creation of external alfresco eating area and new scoops ice cream parlour.

Greendale are undertaking shell works converting the Old Main Weymouth Post Office building into two restaurant outlets.

On the CSR front Greendale’s has had another full and worthwhile year. We have supported many school and college events with motivational speeches, workshops and prize giving.  Site visits have been organised so that students can see first-hand the build process taking shape. Maria Seabright has been invited to the Houses of Parliament on a number of occasions to sit on a Board representing SME’s within the Construction Industry Training Board [CITB] advising on apprenticeships and commenting on the upcoming apprenticeship levy. Following on from her success as a finalist in the CITB Personality of the Year Award,  Maria was asked to speak along with  one of our 1st year carpentry apprentices, Will Spriggs, at the CITB, “I’m Backing Apprentiships,” event at the Houses of Parliament. Both speeches were very well received, being heart felt, inspirational, and with a strong message.  Maria is also our Director link with the Federation of Master Builders.

Rob Hooker continues his work with the CIOB and the Chartered Building Company / Consultancy scheme chairing the Employers Engagement Committee and reporting to the Business Development Board.

Andy Musselwhite promotes and attends the Construction Excellence South West events and as Director in charge of Health and Safety, collected the Building Safety Group award for member of the year for Greendale Construction; recognising our efforts to strive for a safer workplace.

Chris Kane actively involves himself in the wider business community as Greendale’s Business Development representative with the Bournemouth Property Association, Business South and Dorset Business. Chris sits on the Dorset Employment and Skills Board.

We were pleased to be finalists of the Dorset Business Company of the year awards. We received the RICS Community Benefit Award for our ECO Lanterns Workshop project. We were also delighted to have reached gold accreditation for Investors in People on our review this year, and were for the first time represented as finalists for the CIOB Construction Manager of the Year awards for the Blandford Brewery Project. We were also finalists in the Rock Awards for “Rising Star and Star Company of the year.”

Our employees chosen charity was ‘Amelia’s Rainbow’ and following on with the success of last year’s Macmillan Coffee and Cake morning we held another this year which was well supported and raised much needed funds for this charity. We continue to sponsor the Big Little Theatre Company. This year we also sponsored Bransgore Beer Festival and the Summer Family Day at The Littledown Centre.

More intrepid staff formed the ‘Greendale Grafters’ team to raise money doing a gruelling Tough Mudder event with proceeds going to our charity of the year.

Cake

Greendale’s highlight this year was in June, when we celebrated our 25th anniversary.  The momentous event was held in our newly refurbished offices where we invited clients, customers and design teams we have worked with over the years, to join us to celebrating and thanking them in helping us reach this great milestone. We also had a great 25th Anniversary celebratory Family Day at the Orangery Suite and Gardens Merley for all our staff, partners and families.

Conclusion

We face next year with a feeling of pride and solid optimism on al that we have achieved so far and what we still wish to achieve.

Our reputation is everything and we look forward to enhancing that by continuing to professionally deliver the highest quality work, on time, and give the good value that we have built the Greendale name on.

Finally, the board gives a huge thank you to all our hard working staff for their efforts again this year which has been our best to date. Our people are our greatest asset and we are proud and pleased on what we have achieved together in our 25th year. We look forward to an exciting and profitable 2016.
