Play away - local youngsters benefit from new facilities

January 2008

All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy and it certainly isn’t something the Fernheath Play Association would ever encourage either.

Since their adventure playground in West Howe, Bournemouth was first set up in 1976 the registered charity has attracted thousands of children to the after school, weekend and school holiday activities providing valuable play facilities for local families.

Now the centre is able to offer even more to youngsters following the completion of a brand new extension build by Poole based firm Greendale Construction. The improved building and new facilities at the Verney Road site was officially opened by England Rugby hero Richard Hill MBE earlier this week.

A new annexe had already been built by Greendale and was unveiled in September 2006 by former deputy major of Bournemouth, Cllr Ted Taylor, now president of The Fernheath Association. But due to the high numbers of families using the Play Centre, including children with disabilities and special needs, a bigger building and more facilities were still urgently needed.

Phase Two of the project has recently been completed by Greendale and includes an extension to the original building and a sensory room comprising a soft play area and specialised equipment.

Bournemouth Borough Council have always supported Fernheath with a grant towards staffing costs but the new building works were funded entirely by a generous Big Lottery Grant of £150,000 and money from local trusts with an additional donation of £94,600 from the Wooden Spoon Society (the national rugby charity).

States Paddy Williamson of Fernheath, "We will be able to offer a greater variety of activities than ever before and are grateful to all of our benefactors and our local builder and suppliers for all they have done for us."

States Rob Hooker Director of Greendale Construction “ This weeks opening was a great event marking the culmination of the totally transformed and improved play centre. Greendales is proud to be builders of such a worthwhile and popular resource and wish Paddy and her team all the very best for the future at Fernheath.
