Shire Hall, Dorchester – project complete!

On 2nd February, we were delighted to receive practical completion for our project at Shire Hall, Dorchester.  We would like to share with you some before and after shots so you can see the wonderful transformation of this Grade I listed building, bringing this unique historical building back to life. Shire Hall has undergone a major renovation and internal and external refurbishment, including a new roof, new passenger lift, new incoming water and gas services, as well as internal and external redecoration throughout, and all new mechanical and electrical services. A new visitor reception, shop and cafe have all been constructed at basement and lower/upper ground floor levels within the building.

The court was used until 1955, the rest of the building continued to be used for local government until West Dorset District Council moved to new offices in 2012. Time has stood still at the court and cells, which appear today almost as they did in Georgian times. We have created a visitor attraction conserving the atmosphere of the historic building, but bringing to life 200 years of history. Visitors will be able to explore the historic cells and courtroom and there will also be changing exhibitions, events and a lifelong learning programme.
